Ride history[]
X (2002-2007)[]
X was announced by park officials in 2000, with a planned Summer 2001 opening date. However, due to problems in the ride's design, the opening was delayed until January 2002. Although the ride was a huge hit, and, before Tatsu opened in summer 2006, the most popular thrill ride in the park, X had many major problems. 5 months after the grand opening, the ride closed to modify and remodel the trains. The ride reopened two months later in August, and every train since has operated smoothly, with the exception of a single train in summer 2005. Then, in August 2006, three months after Tatsu opened, X closed again to fix a blown gear box part. The ride reopened in February, to operate for about 9-10 more months before retheming.
X2 (2008-Present Day)[]
On December 2, 2007, X closed suddenly without notice. The previous month, Six Flags announced the popular X coaster would get an entire facelift and remodel. Testing began on the new X on March 6, 2008, two months before the rededication. On the night of May 23, 2008, anxious X fans camped outside the park's front doors to be the first riders to get a glimpse at the new X. The following morning, X reopened as X2 to the general public, with about a five-hour line. The ride had new sound effects, a red and grey color scheme, new trains, new restraints, and fire effects. The ride is still the most popular, alongside Tatsu, which continues to fly at the speed of fear on the other side of the park.
Ride synopsis[]
After riders are loaded and are given a final safety check, the train pulls out of the station via left turn. The ride reaches its first brake system, as the train begins to ascend backwards up the 175-foot lift hill. The entire park is visible, due to its location (near the bottom left corner of the park). Riders enter a mini-drop before reaching the 215-foot drop. Then, the train spins 360 degrees into a twisting front flip. The ride then takes its riders into several more inversions, including a skydive, two raven turns, and a back flip before reaching the final brake system.
